zero-g helps globaltrax launch a revolutionary concept in music distribution
Musicians hoping to make their passion more than just a pastime have always had a significant barrier to “turning pro.” Even if they have outstanding music… Even if they have their music professionally recorded… Even if they have an established fan base, it has been nearly impossible for an aspiring musician to gain any kind of meaningful distribution without being signed to a music label. Even then, the terms of most label deals make it difficult for an artist to earn any real money off the sales of their songs.
That’s the problem that longtime music industry veteran Gerald Wiggins wanted to solve for up-and-coming artists when he created GlobalTrax. He had a vision that anyone capable of recording original music would have the means of distributing it through established online music stores like, iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody and more at a low cost (only $10 a month + a one-time initiation fee of $25). Most of all, Wiggins wanted to ensure that — unlike the traditional model — the artists would actually be able to profit from the sales of their music.
When Wiggins and his team presented this concept to us at Zero-G we saw this as a rare opportunity, one of the most unique we’ve ever had. It was truly exciting to be invited into the “inner circle” as the team at GlobalTrax sought to reinvent the music business from the ground up and finally make self-publishing a viable and potentially profitable option for aspiring artists. We were tasked with creating a brand identity for GlobalTrax as well as the venture’s first web site.
The GlobalTrax logo was designed to convey freedom, success and the ability to reach the world. The logo also has a “home made” quality, which we felt spoke directly to an audience that was recording music in their homes, garages and basements.
The web site, launched in March, 2009, was designed to mimic a concert poster, communicating the idea that with GlobalTrax, just about any talented musician could have a shot at stardom. We had a challenge though in that GlobalTrax represents musicians across a wide variety of genres and we had to be sure that the web site design was “inclusive” when it came to speaking to artists who make different kinds of music. So we incorporated a simple drop-down in the right-hand corner of the home page allowing users to “swap” our stereotypical rock star for a star that better represented their own music genre whether they record hip hop, country, R+B or Latin.
“Zero-G Creative developed a unique, eye-catching brand and website that can be customized to user preferences,” Wiggins said. “The site allows us to target our web marketing to musicians in specific genres, thereby maximizing our marketing spend and conversion rates.”
We’d like to thank Gerald and the team at GlobalTrax for allowing us to help them with such a fantastic project. We look forward to continuing the relationship!
