about erik wolf + where this whole zero-g creative idea came from…

Very few people know this about me, but I’ve actually been a graphic designer since I was in the second grade. It was that year  — 1984 — that my family got our first Macintosh and my eventual career path was cemented. In the third grade, I won a writing contest on the strength of a comic book that I created entirely on my Mac.

My dad was, and remains, in the newspaper business in New York City and seemed to know from the very first time he saw a Mac that computers would eventually replace old-fashioned typesetting and tedious handmade page layouts. I had access to the very first version of every major graphics package including Photoshop, Illustrator and PageMaker. By the time I was 16, I was working for my dad part time as a writer and designer. I also built their first web site in 1996.

When I graduated from college at Emory University in Atlanta I already had several times more experience + knowledge than the average design school grad despite never taking an official class. I worked in low-to-mid level design roles for a variety of firms until I landed at a technology startup called META Security Group in 1999. My job wasn’t sexy — designing, producing + managing a series of books + technical manuals — but just like my second grade Mac made me a designer, that job made me a marketer. In 2001, I took on a marketing manager role at a global baby products company called Kids II, Inc. In my “spare” time I got an MBA in Marketing from Georgia State University.

After a couple of years at Kids II, I got my chance to run their marketing communications department, spearheading a few major initiatives like the relaunch of their Bright Starts brand, a new corporate web site and the biggest product launch in the company’s history.

But nothing lasts forever and after 5 years in the baby toy business I decided that it was time to break from corporate rat race. And after spending so much time working exclusively for small and family-owned firms, I realized that I had a lot to offer the small and mid-sized business market. My concept was to help small businesses acquire the same quality of marketing, branding, web + design available to larger firms — but without breaking the bank.

In the time since, my team at Zero-G Creative and I have worked with scores of business owners and helped them take their businesses into the stratosphere with sound strategy and great design.

I also host a national radio show called Gravity Free Radio which airs every Tuesday morning at 10AM.
